Gustav Mahler (1860 - 1911)

One of the biggest world – known conductors and composers of present day was born on July 7th 1860* in small village Kaliště close to Humpolec as a second child of Jewish tradesman Bernhard Mahler and his wife Marie.

*) Historians are consistent with date July 7th. Unfortunately, written record got lost and composer by himself assigned date July 1st. This mystery will be probably never solved.

He spent his childhood and youth in Jihlava. He was living here from December 1860 together with his parents and siblings till September 1875 when he moved to Vienna conservatory. His father provided his trading – tapstering in the house of today’s Mahler’s Guesthouse "Na Hradbách" since 1861. Local areas made for production and sale of distilled beverage, several types of sweet liqueurs and “Rosolka”(Rosoglio – sweet herbal liqueur of Italian origin). Gustav Mahler spent here a lot of time during his young age. He attended his primary school in nearby house no. 134 in years 1866 - 1869.
